Press release
“LIVE THEATRE IN THE LOUNGE!”
The second annual Voorkamerfest (Frontroom Festival) will take place in Darling on September 9, 10 and 11 2005 . At this unique festival, the people of Darling will open their homes to host professional performances by local and international artists. Drama, mime, comedy and cabaret will take place in the sitting rooms and voorkamers of Darling’s residents, in a circuit which will run throughout the West Coast village.
At this year’s event, 21 different performances will be showcased in 21 separate venues. The programme will include artists from the Netherlands, UK, Canada and South Africa. From African rhythms to Dutch mime, Afrikaans drama to British comedy, it’s all on the bill – and in the lounge. The venues will be equally diverse, ranging from Victorian monuments to township homes.
A Dutch initiative, the Voorkamerfest is based on a similar concept which has been showcased in Europe. Now in its second year in South Africa, the festival has been hailed as an exciting mix of community ubuntu spirit and top-notch entertainment. Last year saw literally hundreds of visitors enjoying this special event, drawn from Darling itself and also from as far afield as Holland and the USA.
Part of the appeal is the adventure. Punters must purchase a theatre ticket which will take them on a mystery route through Darling. The ticket price includes transport via taxi.
Each route will feature three different performances in three different homes. Every performance will be no longer than 30 minutes. Adding to the element of surprise is that the audience will not know which performers they will see on their route – they’ll just know that they are in for a magical tour with guaranteed professional entertainment.
Because each venue will only take a maximum of around 20 people, intimacy is guaranteed. So too will genuine hospitality on behalf of the homeowners. Each venue has been sponsored by an established theatre in either South Africa, Europe or the USA. And at each one, the resident family will act as “chaperone managers” for the performances in their houses.
Less than an hour’s drive from Cape Town, Darling is the perfect setting for the Voorkamerfest. The village is known for its vibrant community – including the fabulous Mrs Evita Bezuidenhout and Pieter-Dirk Uys – and the surrounding hills are famous for their wild flowers, Duckitt’s Nursery Orchids, and various wine estates.
The festive atmosphere of the Voorkamer weekend will be enhanced by outside entertainment and arts, crafts and food stalls at Evita se Perron, where each route will depart and end. Evita’s restaurant and bar will be serving light meals and drinks. The village of Darling also boasts a fine range of restaurants which will be open for the duration of the festival.
The festival coincides with the Spring flower season in Darling and surrounds.
The full list of performers will be announced; confirmation has already been received from Dizu Plaatjies and Stef Bos.
Voorkamerfest 2005 will take place Friday 9 to Sunday 11 September.
