AfroTropica Steelband is the professional performing band attached to the Steelband Project (Western Cape). The band ranges in size from a duo to a 7-piece depending on the occasion and venue size. Always colourfully turned out, we play a vibrant repertoire of African, Caribbean and Jazz tunes. The instrumentation is predominately the steelpan, which originated on the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean in the 1940s, and is also augmented with percussion and drumkit.

The band is ideally suited for creating a festive atmosphere at anything from a small cocktail party to a wedding or corporate event. We have performed at numerous high-profile functions for dignitaries and diplomats and have done residencies at the Table Bay Hotel, Ratanga Junction, The Grand and Moyo Restaurant at Spier Wine Estate. The band has also performed at the Sandton Convention Centre (Jhb) and the Durban ICC. More recently the band performed in Mozambique for a Mercedez-Benz function and at Pick ‘n Pay’s 50th birthday celebrations in Sun City.

A CD of our music, titled “Up to So Far”, is also available. A soundclip of the band is available at the following site www.5sm.co.za/world_afrotropica.htm  and more information and a video clip is available at www.afrotropica.steelband.co.za  We also have a Facebook page at AfroTropica Steelband.
