Quintin Goliath is widely known as the multiple award-winning performing artist, Jitsvinger, from Cape Town who coined the term Afrikaaps. He recently received the Neville Alexander Award for Outstanding Contribution towards the Promotion of Multilingualism by the Western Cape Cultural Affairs Awards 2023.
He’s also the recipient of the multiple Kyknet Fiesta Awards for the theatre production Afrikaaps . Jitsvinger is an established Cape Flats-born conceptual writer, composer, guitarist, educator, musician, poet and performing artist. He has released several albums – Skeletsleutel, Jitsologie EP, Knapgat and Jitsonova Vol. 1 (Compos Mentis) – and has collaborated with classical musicians, jazz pioneers and legends, and has performed on stages and in festivals both locally in his home country of South Africa and internationally including Taiwan, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Chilé. He has composed and written music for theatre productions and film. Jitsvinger is a social commentator on issues concerning heritage, culture and especially the Afrikaans language. Legendary theatre director, Basil Appollis collaborated with Jitsvinger in a heritage celebration production titled Rainbow Rhythms at Artscape Theatre which saw Jitsvinger narrating the South Africa’s cultural heritage to a captive audience.
Jitsvinger’s art of spoken word and poetry, along with his unique music style, became the catalyst for his ongoing work in education and social justice programmes. Rooted in social awareness, Jitsvinger has guest lectured, facilitated music, creative writing- and poetry workshops with youth in high school and tertiary institutions, prisons and non-governmental organisations. As a mentor to many Jitsvinger created his own methodology and worked at numerous schools to promote self-awareness through creative writing together with the South African Department of Education and various initiatives from NGOs to corporate entities including motivating aspiring youth during talent shows, scholar award ceremonies and youth camps. He worked with Zero Drop Out Campaign by conducting a series of Education Experience Workshops across the three South African provinces to surface the experiences of school youths relating to issues such as literacy and learning, external challenges and dropout in a manner that is interactive and non-invasive. His ongoing work with the youth also includes working with Students for a Better Future doing motivational talks and workshops teaching critical thinking and self-management. Jitsvinger is active in the film industry doing cameo appearances, writing lyrics and providing music for soundtracks in movies including Four Corners and Tickets. He continues to work with producers and directors as Hip Hop consultant during location scouts, casting and audition processes. Quintin Goliath aka Jitsvinger’s central focus is to promote and celebrate his heritage and culture through popularizing vernacular through poetry, theater and music. He envisions a united culture in South Africa, whereby the history and identity of this indigenous language is restored. He recently released a new album independently titled Jitsonova Vol.1 (Compos Mentis) which he recorded and produced during the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. It features a wide variety of both local and international artists, musicians and producers on the production and is currently available on all major streaming platforms.
